Heqing Handmade Paper: The Art of Fiber & Time

Heqing Handmade Paper: The Art of Fiber & Time

Heqing Handmade Paper is a Bai ethnic craft with a history spanning over a thousand years. Made from locally sourced paper mulberry (Broussonetia papyrifera) bark, it embodies a deep understanding of natural fibers, time, and meticulous technique. This tradition remains a living testament to Bai heritage and folk knowledge.

Technique & Materials

Each sheet follows a careful, multi-step process refined over centuries:

  • Soaking and fermenting paper mulberry bark
  • Steaming and repeated rinsing
  • Bark peeling and blending with herbal mucilage
  • Hand-forming sheets
  • Natural sun-drying

Only renewable materials—paper mulberry bark, lime, and plant ash—are used, preserving both fiber quality and a sustainable craft tradition.
