DAY 01 | KUNMING
Meet Yunnan
Everyday Life & Cultural Roots
The journey begins in Kunming.
Rather than rushing from one attraction to another, we begin with everyday life.
Morning
Walk through Zhuanxin Farmers' Market, exploring seasonal produce, local ingredients, wild herbs, and the flavors of Yunnan.
Take a quiet coffee break before continuing through the city.
Afternoon
Visit the Yunnan Provincial Museum of Ethnology to begin understanding Yunnan's diverse ethnic cultures, traditional clothing, textiles, and material traditions.
Evening
A welcome dinner introducing the flavors of Yunnan.
The journey begins by slowing down.
DAY 02 | DALI
Blue & White
Bai Indigo Dyeing
Travel to Dali, between Cangshan Mountain and Erhai Lake.
Today, we enter the world of traditional Bai indigo dyeing.
Craft Experience
Learn about traditional resist-dyeing techniques, including tie-dye, clamp dyeing, and natural indigo.
Fold. Stitch. Bind. Dye.
Under the guidance of an experienced local artisan, create your own piece of cloth using traditional techniques.
You can even bring a drawing, pattern, or image that you love and explore how it might be translated into cloth.
When the fabric is finally unfolded, the result is never quite what you imagined.
That is part of the beauty of making something by hand.
In the afternoon, leave the old town behind and explore the surrounding villages and fields.
Take home something made by your own hands.
DAY 03 | DALI
Paper & Time
Traditional Papermaking
Today, we move from thread to another material:
Paper.
Discover the process of traditional papermaking, from locally sourced plant fibers to pulp, and from pulp to handmade paper.
Craft Experience
Learn how fibers are prepared, how paper is formed, and how natural materials can become something both simple and enduring.
Make your own sheet of handmade paper, incorporating natural leaves or flowers where appropriate.
This is not about making as much as possible.
It is about understanding the relationship between material, water, time, and human hands.

DAY 04 | XISHUANGBANNA
Into the Tropical Borderlands
Land, Food & Everyday Life
Travel south to Xishuangbanna.
The landscape changes.
So do the food, architecture, languages, and rhythms of everyday life.
Visit a local market and explore a traditional Dai village.
When possible, meet local makers in their homes or workshops and see how textiles and other crafts exist within everyday life.
Share a meal featuring local ingredients and traditional Dai flavors.
Today is less about learning a particular technique.
It is about understanding the place where the craft lives.

DAY 05 | XISHUANGBANNA
The Language of Threads
Dai Weaving, Rag Weaving & Pottery
Today we enter the world of traditional weaving.
Sit beside a local weaver and learn the basic structure of a traditional handloom — the relationship between warp and weft, rhythm and repetition.
Then try weaving yourself.
We also introduce rag weaving, where old textiles are torn into strips and woven again into new cloth.
An old material.
A familiar technique.
A new life.
In the afternoon, move from thread to earth and experience traditional Dai pottery.
Shape clay by hand and discover another way in which local materials become objects for everyday life.

DAY 06 | XISHUANGBANNA
Living Traditions
Follow Your Curiosity
After several days of moving through different materials and traditions, there is no need to see more.
Instead, choose one thing to stay with.
GO DEEPER
Return to a craft that interested you most and spend more time learning with a local artisan.

Return to Kunming for your onward journey.
