Behind Yuntopia | Notes from the Founders

People often ask how this began.

There isn’t a single moment we can point to. No clear starting line.

It began, perhaps, with returning.

Growing up in Yunnan, we were surrounded by landscapes, traditions, and everyday objects shaped by generations of making. Yet, like many people who grow up somewhere, we did not always recognize the value of what was closest to us.

Leaving home, studying and living abroad, and later returning to Yunnan changed the way we looked at this place.

We came back to familiar landscapes with unfamiliar eyes.

We began to notice the things we had once taken for granted:

A piece of cloth.
A way of weaving.
A material used again and again.

Not simply as objects, but as expressions of time, memory, and the people who made them.

What we are building is not only a collection of objects.

It is an attempt to understand the connections between materials, people, landscapes, and ways of living.

Some of these connections are visible.
Many are not.

We do not try to define Yunnan.

That has never felt possible.

A place this diverse cannot be captured by a single story.

What we can do is share what we encounter — slowly, and in parts.

Through a piece of textile.
Through a traditional process.
Through a road taken more than once.

And perhaps, over time, something begins to take shape.

Not as an answer.

But as a way of seeing.
